Right to equal treatment and service

  • Regardless of race, gender, gender identity and expression, religion, sexual orientation, physical ability, age (18+), place of origin, HIV or STBBI status, class, and all other grounds protected by the Alberta Human Rights Commission.

  • A commitment to a stigma-free environment prioritizing ongoing growth and learning, and an accountability process that centres any harmed person - focusing on moving forward with education and preventative action.

  • A commitment to intervene, address, and end any concerns or actions that may cause harm.

  • The right to transparency in tattoo costs, and to be informed of any changes prior to being tattooed.

Right to a clean and comfortable environment

  • We will follow the public health and safety requirements outlined by our public health unit, and will hold ourselves to high standards.

  • We will not engage in practices that risk a person’s health and safety.

  • We reserve the right to refuse service to any person who creates an environment that is hostile, unsafe, or otherwise uncomfortable for employees or other clients in the space.

Right to respectful communication and environment

  • The right to be addressed by your preferred name and correct pronouns.

  • The right to be in an environment free from hate speech, verbal harassment, and threats to safety.

  • A commitment to cultivating a safer space, not inviting any of the above.

  • The right to choose the topics of discussions that are engaged during your appointment, or to choose a silent appointment.

  • The right to decline to disclose or discuss any aspect of your personal life.

Right to an Artist technically and stylistically suited to your tattoo request, or a reference to someone who is

  • The right to our artists to specialize in their own unique styles, to ensure the best results and bestow a tattoo that can be enjoyed. When your request isn’t in line with our artist’s style or skill, we will refer you to an artist or studio that is better suited to your needs.

  • The right to say “no,” for both clients and artists, including the right to say no if we feel that a tattoo may negatively impact a potential client’s health.

  • A commitment to transparency and honesty regarding tattoo expectations and outcomes from clients and artists.

Right to ask clarifying and technical questions, and to have them answered with respect and patience.

  • The right to  discuss the tattoo process as it applies to your tattoo, and to explain the technical aspects of healing your tattoo, how tattoos age, and the design overall, and to be only tattooed when giving informed consent.

Right to be asked for approval for final design, changes, and placement.

  • The right to feel comfortable, safe, and accommodated when asking for those changes, and to be informed of when those changes are not possible.

Right to be asked for consent

  • The right to consent for physical contact and touch needed to apply the stencil and to perform your tattoo, including the adjustment or removal of clothing that can obstruct the area needed for tattooing, and only with consent, to proceed with the necessary adjustments.

  • The right to consent to, throughout your appointment, the taking and posting of photos and videos, and the showing of the tattoo to other individuals in the space.

  • The right to stop an appointment if desired.

Right to request and be provided with provisions toward your personal privacy and comfort

  • The right to let your artist know if you’re uncomfortable and to the best ability of the artist and shop, be provided chairs, cushions, or any other provisions available to assist. If you need to stretch, change positions, or use the lavatory/washroom/bathroom, please let your artist know.

  • The right to request privacy screens, regardless of the placement of your tattoo.

Right to have your accessibility needs met to the extent that the shop and artist are able to provide them

  • The right to have any questions about accessibility answered prior to your appointment.

  • The Terrace is situated on the second floor, with access via a staircase, which can make access difficult for those with mobility difficulties. In circumstances where access to the studio cannot be met, please reach out and we’ll look towards alternative solutions. 

Right to self advocacy

  • The right to speak up and be heard if anything during your session, or your overall experience at The Terrace, does not feel right. If you do not feel comfortable discussing these things in front of others in the studio, please ask your artist for a private conversation. If speaking in person is difficult for you, please feel free to email the studio or your artist on your thoughts regarding your experience with us. We will always strive to do our best at providing a safe and comfortable environment for our clients, so your feedback is always valued.

Right to confidentiality

  • The right to have your personal and private information remain confidential, including the right to be asked for consent before photos and videos of you are taken or posted. If there is any information you have discussed that you would like kept confidential, please let us know and we will respect your privacy.
